Different Ways to Structure Your Story

There are different ways to structure your story. In this post I’m going to be going introducing 4 different story structures that you can use, and then you may be able to pick which one you think may best suit you or the story you are writing.

The Three Act Story Structure

The Three Act Story Structure is one of the most common ways to structure a story. It consists of a setup (usually the first quarter of the story… brought about by an inciting incident), confrontation (usually the longest part of the story – consisting of the rising action) and resolution (the ending… usually consisting of the time before, during and after the climax).

You can learn about this structure in more detail here.

The Seven Point Story Structure

This structure consists of seven key points of your story from beginning to end. You can learn about this structure in more detail here.

Snowflake Method

The Snowflake Method consists of starting with one central idea and then expanding more ideas from that until you have written a novel. The steps for carrying out this structure are:

  • write a one sentence story summary
  • expand it to a one paragraph summary
  • start small with your characters
  • expand your one paragraph summary to a single page
  • write a page on each main character and half a page on minor ones
  • expand everything into a four page synopsis and then write a list of the scenes in the book

You can learn about this structure in more detail here.
